Eclipse Stabilised Turf once again selected for Australia’s theatre of dreams at the MCG in readiness for the 2015 Cricket World Cup
The HG Sports Turf affiliation with the MCG stretches back to 1998. Since this time HG Sports Turf have become the official turf supply partner of the MCG. In 2014 the hallowed turf was due for a scheduled replacement and HG Sports Turf were once again appointed to complete the works using their patented product Eclipse Stabilised Turf.
Works commenced immediately after the 2014 Grand Final that saw Hawthorn defeat Sydney Swans in a pulsating game. Not long after the stadium had emptied, HG Sports Turf were mobilising a fleet of machinery to tackle the project. After 12 months of meticulous planning, and with a window of only 3 weeks to completed the project, works commenced.
The scope of works including stripping, stockpiling and removal of the existing playing surface down to approx. 100mm. This amounted to 2000cu of material removed off site. In order to meet MCG’s environmental responsibilities the spoil material was removed and reused at a local motor cross track where the material was used to create spectator mounds and jumps rather than being sent to landfill.
The next stage in the process saw the importation of approx. 800cu of USGA sand to match the existing profile and ensure that the field matched the original reconstructed design levels. The sand was placed and laser graded to achieve the finished result which is a flat grade across the surface except for 10m from the boundary which has a 0.5% fall to the outer perimeter.
Further to the reconstruction of the playing surface a new synthetic boundary was t constructed around the playing surface. HG Sports Turf installed their, AFL Approved, Desso iDNAx 40mm synthetic system with shockpad and performance infill.
With the sand placement completed and lasered to a fine tolerance, amendments were added to the profile prior to the installation of the Eclipse Stabilised Turf.
The Eclipse Stabilised Turf had been grown and prepared at HG Sports Turfs farm in Victoria and 10 truckloads of turf equating to 3300m2 per day were delivered and installed
by the team. On completion of each day the portion laid was checked and approved before handing back to the MCG grounds staff for maintenance.
The new surface was independently tested by LaboSport using their ScorePlay testing model and proved an excellent result was achieved.
